Why n8n runs in Germany
The difference to the big cloud services is not feature count but location. Zapier and Make process your data on their own infrastructure, usually outside the EU. n8n you can run yourself — on a server you or we control.
For companies handling staff data, patient records, client files or design data, that is rarely a matter of taste. With us n8n runs in German data centres, with a data processing agreement and without a detour through third countries.
Honesty requires the limit too: n8n is fair-code under the Sustainable Use License, not open source in the strict sense. The source is public, self-hosting and adapting it for your own operation are explicitly allowed — reselling it as your own service is not. Automating your own processes, you never notice. Planning a product on top of it, you should know beforehand.

Common questions about n8n
Is n8n open source?
Not in the strict sense, and it is worth knowing the difference. n8n is distributed as fair-code under the Sustainable Use License: the source is public, you may self-host it and adapt it for your own use, but the licence restricts commercial resale — offering n8n as a hosted service to others, for instance. For a company automating its own processes that restriction never comes up. For anyone planning to build a product on top of it, it does.
n8n or Zapier and Make?
n8n is the stronger fit when data must stay in Germany, when volumes are high enough that per-operation pricing hurts, or when you need custom code, webhooks and database triggers. Zapier and Make are quicker for simple, low-volume chains between mainstream SaaS tools. We compare the three on our workflow automation page instead of talking you into one.
Where is our data when you host n8n?
On our infrastructure in German data centres. Note the limit of that statement: n8n itself stays in Germany, but a workflow that calls an external service sends data to wherever that service runs. Which providers your flows touch is part of what we go through with you.
Can we host n8n ourselves?
Yes, and sometimes that is the right call — if someone in-house keeps it updated, monitored and backed up. That is the real cost of self-hosting, not the server. We are happy to set it up on your infrastructure and hand it over.
What happens when n8n releases a new version?
With hosting from us, updates are part of the deal. The work is rarely in the update itself but in whatever a workflow depends on — a changed API at the other end breaks a flow more often than an n8n release does. That is exactly what the monitoring is for.
